The award<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>was created as a gift to Lady Soames, Sir Winston Churchill\u2019s youngest daughter, to mark her 90th birthday, in 2012, and is given in recognition of achievement in history.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none; line-height: 15.399999618530273px;\"><em><span lang=\"EN-US\">Peter was one of 130 people being honoured at the ceremony<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to mark the successful completion of their overseas research as Churchill Fellows. Churchill Fellows are funded to travel for 4-8 weeks overseas, researching new ideas that can make a difference to their communities or professions in the UK.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none; line-height: 15.399999618530273px;\"><em><span lang=\"EN-US\">For his Fellowship, Peter travelled to Australia and New Zealand in 2016 to research the story of HM Bark<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Endeavour.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Endeavour\u00a0famously carried James Cook on his first great voyage, visiting Pacific islands unknown to European geography, charting New Zealand for the first time and the eastern coast of Australia and almost foundering on the Great Barrier Reef.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none; line-height: 15.399999618530273px;\"><em><span lang=\"EN-US\">Peter\u2019s research in Australia and New Zealand informed his forthcoming book, \u2018Endeavour: The Ship and the Attitude that Changed the World\u2019, which will be published in the UK on 23 August 2018 (Chatto &amp; Windus)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and in the USA (Farrar, Straus &amp; Giroux) shortly afterwards.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none; line-height: 15.399999618530273px;\"><em>Speaking about his Fellowship, Peter said, \u201cIt is easy to think that<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Endeavour\u2019s<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>story belongs firmly in the past. It\u2019s now 250 years since James Cook, Joseph Banks and ninety or so others set out from Plymouth in a tiny coal collier bound for the far side of the world. But the effects of what happened then are still very much being felt today.
