Invited by Hassan Hadi, Director of the Modern Art Theatre Group and Bj\u00f6rn Ganzer, the Swedish poet (and rock musician) who travelled with us on the Al-Kalima \u2018Poetry and Resistance\u2019 Festival in Morocco earlier this year, the festival was dedicated to the memory of the Nobel Prize-winning Swedish Poet Laureate, Tomas Transtr\u00f6mer.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A surprising statistic is that 41% Malm\u00f6 residents have a foreign background; of these the largest community is Iraqi (nearly 10,000 people). Adnan himself took refuge here for eight years before moving to London in 2004. This multiculturalism is reflected by a section in the vast public library (Stadsbiblioteket) featuring \u2018Malm\u00f6s m\u00e5nga spr\u00e5k\u2019 \u2013 not \u2018Malm\u00f6\u2019s manga comics\u2019 as I first thought but \u2018Malm\u00f6\u2019s many languages\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>POESI-O-RAMA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Director Hassan Hadi, from Iraq, worked for several years with Transtr\u00f6mer and Adnan on theatre pieces combining poetry with dance, movement and mime and his vision for POESI-O-RAMA was to build on this, creating a cross-cultural, multimedia showcase to express ideas about resistance to oppression and inequality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The evening started with what was one of the last filmed interviews with Transtr\u00f6mer in Stockholm in 2014 (he died in March 2015) and continued with an international line-up of poets and performers.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.conted.ox.ac.uk\/mstcw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Picture-clipping-2.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"828\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/blogs.conted.ox.ac.uk\/mstcw\/?attachment_id=828\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.conted.ox.ac.uk\/mstcw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Picture-clipping-2.jpg?fit=1116%2C892&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"1116,892\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Picture clipping 2\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.conted.ox.ac.uk\/mstcw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Picture-clipping-2.jpg?fit=300%2C240&amp;ssl=1\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.conted.ox.ac.uk\/mstcw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Picture-clipping-2.jpg?fit=1024%2C818&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"  wp-image-828 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.conted.ox.ac.uk\/mstcw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Picture-clipping-2.jpg?resize=199%2C162&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Picture clipping 2\" width=\"199\" height=\"162\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a>Transtr\u00f6mer with wife Monica (far right) Adnan al-Sayegh and Loloat Hadi<\/p>\n<p>The messages, although political, were often conveyed with humour, an approach used by Transtr\u00f6mer himself in his poem \u2018Allegro\u2019 (From\u00a0Tomas Transtr\u00f6mer, <em>New Collected Poems<\/em>, translated by Robin Fulton (Bloodaxe Books, 1997\/2011) which says &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>The music says freedom exists\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I push down my hands in my Haydnpockets<br \/>\nand imitate a person looking on the world calmly.<\/p>\n<p>I hoist the Haydnflag &#8211; it signifies:<br \/>\n&#8220;We don&#8217;t give in. But want peace.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the evening we were reminded of the current exodus of human beings risking death in their flight from war, torture, rape and mass murder. The young Bosnian poet Merima Dizadervic, from a refugee community herself, was eloquent &#8211; as was dancer Sanela Jusofovic. There were strong performances from Swedish poets Mauritz Tistel\u00f6, Bob Hansson and Bj\u00f6rn Ganzer. It went down very well with the culturally mixed, but largely Arab, audience<\/p>\n<p>NON MILITARY STATEMENTS<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Neutralisation [<em>killing soldiers<\/em>] is part of any war as are soft targets [<em>bombing civilians<\/em>]<\/li>\n<li>Life deprivation [<em>killing anyone<\/em>] and surgical strikes [<em>shelling and bombing<\/em>] can be justified<\/li>\n<li>Extraordinary rendition [<em>kidnapping<\/em>] of illegal combatants [<em>people we don\u2019t like<\/em>] is necessary in the war against terror<\/li>\n<li>Enhanced coercive interrogation [<em>torture<\/em>] is used to get the truth about weapons of mass destruction [<em>biological, chemical, nuclear and imaginary<\/em>]<\/li>\n<li>Collateral damage [<em>civilian deaths<\/em>] is unfortunate as is the number of non viable combat personnel [<em>wounded soldiers<\/em>]<\/li>\n<li>The number of incidents of friendly fire [<em>accidentally killed by own troops<\/em>] is regrettable as is the body count of non-operatives [<em>dead soldiers<\/em>]<\/li>\n<li>During war, more money can often be generated through sales of weapons than in times of permanent pre-hostility [<em>peace<\/em>]<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As in the past, my engagement with the Arab world through the research and writing of <em>Taking Mesopotamia <\/em>and the translation of many of the poems into Arabic is what led to the invitation for me to attend the festival.<\/p>\n<p><strong>POESI-O-RAMA 2016<br \/>\n<\/strong>The exceptionally good and exciting news is that Hassan has now acquired substantial funding to make the festival an annual event.
