William Hazlitt Essay Prize (Notting Hill Editions): closing date 1 August 2013

Notting Hill Editions has launched an annual literary prize for the best essay in the English language, of between 2,000 and 8,000 words, published or unpublished, on any subject.

 The chair of judges is author and journalist Harry Mount. The other judges are Gaby Wood, Adam Mars-Jones, Lady Antonia Fraser, David Shields.
Entries between 2,000 and 8,000 words.
Entry fee £10.Award £15,000.
Five runners-up will each receive £1000.

Authors of any nationality are eligible, but submissions must have been written originally in English.
“If already published, the essay must have appeared for the first time in periodical (print or online) but not book form, between 1 January 2012 and 31 July 2013.”

Mslexia Women’s Pamphlet Competition, closing date 17 June 2013

For short collections of 20-24 pages of 18-20 pems by women poets who have not previously had a full-length collection published.

1st prize: Publication by Seren Books, plus £250, 25 complimentary copies of the pamphlet and a 10 per cent royalty on sales.

One or more poems from the pamphlet will be published in _Mslexia_ magazine.

MSt alumni Paul Sweeten and Luke Smith launch literary journal The Harlequin

MSt graduates Paul Sweeten and Luke Smith have launched The Harlequin, a new quarterly literary journal featuring poetry, fiction, interviews and personal essays. The first issue features poetry from MSt tutors Jane Draycott and Geore Szirtes, and also work from Lydia Davis, Jim Shepard, William Kittredge, Sara Miller and more.

The 17 Winchester Writers’ Competitions are now open – the competitions include

  • The First Three Pages of the Novel

  • the Young Writers Poetry Competition.

Entries must be original, unpublished work, written by one author, submitted using a pseudonym and must not have won an award in any previous competition. Self-published work is acceptable. Copyright remains with the author. The deadline is 24 May, 2013 for all competitions, except the Young Writers’ Poetry Competition, which has a deadline of 19 July.

Sixty-three prizes and five trophies will be awarded at the Writers’ Awards Ceremony on June 22nd, during the 33rd Winchester Writers’ Conference. In addition, the winner of each competition will be published in the Winchester Writers’ Conference anthology,_The Best of 2013_, published in the autumn. Harvill Secker Young Translators’ Prize

The language of focus in 2013 is Portuguese, the text to be translated is ‘O sucesso’ by Brazilian author Adriana Lisboa.

The judges are Ellie Steel (editor),  Naomi Alderman (author),  Margaret Jull Costa (translator) and  Ángel Gurría-Quintan (literary reviewer).

Open to all between the ages of 18 and 34, with no restriction on country of residence.

Deadline for entries is 2nd August 2013.
