Poetry Society commissions MSt tutor Jane Draycott and others for “Beginning to See the Light”, 8th Oct 2015

The Poetry Society has commissioned new pieces from MSt tutor Jane Draycott,  Raymond Antrobus, Malika Booker, Holly Corfield Carr,  Caleb Klaces and Richard Price, for the National Poetry Day show “Beginning to See the Light” at the Southbank Centre, London.

From high noon to neon-lit midnight, from the hum of a strip light to the gleam of the moon, six spot-lit writers trace the course of light through the day in a series of newly commissioned poems. What’s illuminated, what stays in the shadows: follow the poets as they bring the day’s discoveries into the light.

“Beginning to See the Light”, Thursday 8 October 2015, 7.30 – 9.00 pm

MSt tutor Nicoletta Demetriou co-authors “Music in Cyprus”

The volume of essays, Music in Cyprus, co-authored by MSt tutor Nicoletta Demetriou and Jim Samson, Emeritus Professor of Music at Royal Holloway, University of London, has been published by Ashgate.

The authors consider such questions as: What is the role of different musics in defining national, regional, social and cultural identities in Cyprus? How do Cypriot alterities illuminate European projects of modernity? And what has been the impact of westernization and modernization (and, conversely, of orientalization) on music in Cyprus? The book will be of interest to students and academics working not only in both historical musicology and ethnomusicology, but also in the history and anthropology of Cyprus and of the entire Greek-Anatolian region.

Read more, look inside at Ashgate’s website.

MSt tutor Jenny Lewis on being one of the “Mulberry Bush Women of the Year 2015”

Woman of the Year 2015 lunchOne of my students very sweetly nominated me as a ‘Mulberry Bush Women of the Year 2015’ and I was duly invited to lunch at Balliol. I was surprised and grateful to be nominated as the nominees are chosen as a mark of admiration for the way they have improved the lives of others and inspired them.

This was the fifteenth Mulberry School Women of the Year lunch which in the past has featured speakers such as Baroness Scotland, Nicola Horlick and P.D. James. The event is a way of fund-raising for, and raising awareness of, the achievements of the Mulberry Bush School which gives hope to children who have experienced high levels of domestic violence and neglect.

Now, with the emergence of self-publishing and digital platforms as legitimate vehicles for new works, what options are available to emerging writers? In this session, our panel of experts will discuss traditional as well as alternative means of getting published – and the best ways to improve your chances of finding the right publisher for your work.

MSt Tutor, Jenny Lewis, at the POESI-O-RAMA Festival, Malmö, Sweden, 11-13 September, 2015

I was honoured to be asked to read with Adnan al-Sayegh at the POESI-O-RAMA Festival in Malmo, Sweden on 12 September 2015. Invited by Hassan Hadi, Director of the Modern Art Theatre Group and Björn Ganzer, the Swedish poet (and rock musician) who travelled with us on the Al-Kalima ‘Poetry and Resistance’ Festival in Morocco earlier this year, the festival was dedicated to the memory of the Nobel Prize-winning Swedish Poet Laureate, Tomas Tranströmer.
